Balkan Championships Volos 2026: Records, Historic Achievements and Milestones

The 2026 Balkan Athletics Championships in Volos concluded with great organizational and sporting success, bringing together all 22 member federations of Balkan Athletics. The event delivered memorable performances, historic milestones and numerous records across the two competition days.

A total of 19 federations won at least one medal, while 14 celebrated at least one gold medal. Turkey topped the gold medal table with 13 titles, while Greece collected the highest overall medal tally with 39 medals, marking its best result since 1998.

Several historic achievements highlighted the championships. One member federation celebrated its first-ever Balkan title thanks to victory in the men’s 800 m, while Greece reached 574 gold medals in Balkan Championships history and moved into second place on the all-time list.

Five championship records were improved in Volos. New marks were set in the men’s 1,500 m, men’s 400 m hurdles, men’s 4×400 m relay, men’s long jump and the mixed 4×400 m relay.

Throughout the championships, athletes produced an impressive 91 individual personal best performances, including combined events disciplines, underlining the high competitive level of the event.

Seven individual champions successfully defended their titles from the previous edition, while seven relay and team titles also remained in the hands of last year’s winners.

Among the historical highlights, Romanian discus thrower Alin Firfirica claimed his eighth Balkan title, equalling the all-time record in the discipline. Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou secured his fourth Balkan long jump title and moved closer to the all-time event record held by Serbia’s Nenad Stekić.

The 2026 Balkan Athletics Championships once again demonstrated the strength, tradition and continued development of athletics across the Balkan region.
